Valencia, CA, November 26—The Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance at CalArts closes out its fall semester with four performances of the annual Winter Dance Concert—presented this year on December 6  and 7 at the Walt Disney Modular Theater on the CalArts campus and the following weekend, December 13 and 14, at REDCAT in downtown Los Angeles.

This year’s program features Alpert Award-Winner Julia Rhoads’ Memory Mash, an excerpt from the evening-length work, Punk Yankees, which was created in collaboration with her company Lucky Plush Productions. Integrating dance, dialogue, video and the internet, Memory Mash unpacks ideas about authenticity, originality, and the ownership of dance in the digital age. In her re-working of Memory Mash for CalArts, Rhoads builds upon movement that the dancers performed in the works of other choreographers, and re–mixes and re–contextualizes the samples into an entirely new work. Punk Yankees is supported through a fellowship from the Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography.

This year’s concert also features world premieres by acclaimed choreographers Julie Bour and Colin Connor. Bour’s Never Ending Game is a meditation on the often-imperceptible presence of seduction within human interactions. Says Bour, "Never Ending Game is an observation of the daily interplay of seduction that is, ultimately, our raison d'être.” Bour’s body of work includes creations for Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet and Los Angeles’s Gallery Dilettante and an upcoming commission from France’s Ballet de l'Opéra de Bordeaux.

Finishing the evening’s program is The Weather in the Room by choreographer and faculty member Colin Connor, whose more than 40 commissions span the worlds of contemporary dance, ballet and flamenco. The Weather in the Room explores the emotional climate of a relationship and features an intergenerational cast including guest faculty performers Stephan Koplowitz (School of Dance) and Heather Ehlers (School of Theater).

Connor says about the piece, “In our time, dance tends toward youth, to the illustration of things youthful. Here I am intrigued by maturity and the expressiveness of that maturity, but also by how the younger performers can unleash what simmers under the surface, thrilling storms, icy blasts of air, warm breezes.” The work is a collaboration with Canadian composer Sarah Shugarman, whose compositions are highly regarded for their potent emotional evocations.
