CalArtians Recognized with United States Artists Fellowships
Four CalArtians received United States Artists (USA) Fellowships. On November 11, the USA Fellows program announced the 2008 recipients of 50 annual $50,000 unrestricted grants. Michael Asher (School of Art, faculty), Andrea Bowers (MFA, School of Art, 1992), Rodney McMillian (MFA, School of Art, 2002), and Catherine Sullivan (BFA, School of Theater, 1992) were four of ten artists receiving Visual Arts fellowships. Based in Los Angeles, Asher, Bowers, and McMillian were the only Californians to receive awards in that category. Sullivan is currently based in Chicago.
The fifty winning artists—five in Architecture and Design; four in Crafts and Traditional Arts; five in Dance; nine in Literature (fiction, nonfiction, and poetry); six in Media (film and video); six in Music; five in Theater Arts; and 10 in Visual Arts—were selected by a panel of experts from 362 nominated artists.
