CalArts Honors Outstanding Artistic Achievement at Graduation

Founder and Artistic Director of LINES Ballet Company Alonzo King to Receive Honorary Doctor of Arts Degree from California Institute of the Arts (CalArts)

Robert Rosenwasser, LINES Ballet Company Co-Founder and Associate Artistic Director to receive a Distinguished Alumni Award

Valencia, CA, May 16, 2007-- Steven D. Lavine, President of California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) will confer an honorary Doctor of Arts degree to Alonzo King, the Company Founder and Artistic Director of San Francisco-based LINES Ballet Company. Also, Robert Rosenwasser, LINES Ballet Company Co-Founder and Associate Artistic Director will receive a Distinguished Alumni Award. Mr. King and Mr. Rosenwasser will be recognized during CalArts' commencement ceremony on Friday, May 18 at 6 p.m.

Mr. King is honored for his extraordinary contributions to contemporary arts and culture, notably for his groundbreaking expansion of the vocabularies of choreography, dance, performance, and dance education.

In 1982, Mr. King founded LINES Contemporary Ballet (later renamed Alonzo King's LINES Ballet) in San Francisco. He based his approach to training on two elements of dance education the awareness of a "spiritual force" and the concept that "it is within you." In an interview, Mr. King once said, "what I'm really interested in is getting closer to the truth. I'm trying to reveal what's hidden behind all of us. I'm interested in what is common to all of us. When people talk about the classical ideal of nobility, that's the nobility of the soul."

Mr. King is an alumnus of CalArts. Many of his 165 original works of choreography have entered the repertories of companies throughout the world. His activities as an artist-citizen include writing about dance, serving as commissioner for the city and county of San Francisco, and in partnership with the Dominican University of California, launching a new BFA program in Dance.

Distinguished Alumnus, Robert Rosenwasser is a co-founder of Alonzo King's LINES Ballet. He has helped shape the aesthetic and artistic direction of each project at LINES Ballet, including conceptual design and production. In addition to his work with LINES, he has created costumes for Frankfurt Ballet, The Royal Swedish Ballet, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, San Francisco Ballet, Hong Kong Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, North Carolina Dance Theater and Dance Theatre of Harlem. As Art Director for Kelsey St. Press, he has collaborated with artists and poets including: Richard Tuttle, Kiki Smith, Laurie Reid, Anne Dunn and Kate Delos. His work is found at the New York Museum of Modern Art in the department of Books and Illustrated Prints, at the Whitney Museum, and at the Spencer Collection of the New York Public Library.
