Call numbers

          

Call numbers are the numbers used to store books and scores in our library. Academic libraries such as CalArts use Library of Congress Subject Headings to organize materials.

 

How to read call numbers:

 

 

Line 1

Letter - Alphabetical A-Z
for broad or general categories,
2nd letter for more specific category

 

Line 2

Number
Read numbers the way you count:
1 comes before 50, 250 comes after 3.

 


Line 3

Letters / decimal number combination

(called the Cutter number).
Read letters as you read the alphabet,
Read numbers as you read decimals:
.A75 comes before .A8

 

Line 4

Last line is often the publication year.
Sometimes it shows a volume:
v. 3 = volume 3
