Louise Sandhaus is the former Director of the Graphic Design Program and currently full-time faculty. Her design office, LSD, frequently partners with Durfee | Regn Architects to realize complex interpretive exhibitions through a synthesis of architecture, media, and graphic design. Louise has curated and organized numerous conferences and events addressing graphic design education in changing contexts, including the AGIA-sponsored Schools of Thoughts series focusing on graphic design education as it reflects changing practice in the age of rapidly changing media. She is a frequent contributor to the design press on graphic design education and has increasingly been recognized as leading voice in design pedagogy and is on the AIGA National Steering Committee for Education. The exhibition that she curated, Exhibitions and Aftershocks, included 80 unique silk-screened posters produced by the CalArts Graphic Design Program students over a period of 20 years. The exhibition examined the distinctive characteristics of the work as a product of California, CalArts, and the Graphic Design Program between 1985 to the present. The exhibition was shown in 1984 at Ecole des Beau-Arts de Rennes and at the Museé de Publicité, Paris and appeared in Spring, 2007 in Los Angeles at the Barnsdall Gallery. posters.calarts.edu Louise’s work and writing have appeared in numerous publications including Step, PRINT, Eye, Metropolis, and Émigré, and her work has been recognized by PRINT, AIGA 365, The Art Directors Club, and the American Center for Design, among many others. Her work is in the permanent collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Bibliothèque nationale de France, Paris.
