Assistant Provost for Equity and Diversity

Full-Time Position

CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE OF THE ARTS seeks to appoint an Assistant Provost to work with the Provost’s and President’s offices and other relevant councils and departments of the Institute to increase awareness of diversity as a critical component of the educational and artistic life of CalArts and to help create an inclusive and supportive environment for a diverse student body, faculty and staff. The Assistant Provost for Equity and Diversity will be the point person in an Institute-wide effort to encourage greater student, faculty, and staff understanding of and sensitivity toward differences in cultural and ethnic backgrounds and to develop policies and programs that help prepare students to live and act effectively in a complex and diverse world. S/he will encourage students and faculty to take advantage of their own distinctive talents and resources in making their art. The Assistant Provost for Equity and Diversity will also be charged with ensuring compliance with accreditation standards regarding diversity. 

Qualifications to be considered include:
-MA, MFA, or higher degree
-Knowledge of the best contemporary research and practices in representation and diversity
-Previous experience working in a complex institutional
  framework
-Demonstrated interest in the arts

The Assistant Provost for Equity and Diversity will:
1) Provide counsel to all faculty, staff and constituents (including Academic Council and the Diversity Committee) on development of policies and procedures responsive to issues of diversity;
2) Facilitate workshops for students, faculty and staff on areas of diversity, including new student orientation;
3) Advise Search Committees on more effective ways to develop diverse applicant pools;
4) Facilitate activities of student special interest groups devoted to areas of diversity;
5) Advise individual students, faculty, and staff on living, learning, and working productively in a diverse community;
6) Assist the Provost in mediating and resolving problems that arise among faculty, staff, and students regarding equity and diversity;
7) Recommend appropriate interventions when students, faculty or staff encounter discrimination;
8) Advise, when necessary, on the development of curricula sensitive to issues of diversity within arts practice;
9) Participate in long-range diversity planning at CalArts;
10) Keep informed on current issues of diversity in other educational institutions, participating in appropriate panels and conferences, both at CalArts and regionally, and representing CalArts at such public fora.
