2D Character Animation Faculty
The Character Animation program in the School of Film/Video at CalArts seeks applicants for a full-time, nine-month faculty position beginning Fall 2010.
Character Animation at CalArts is recognized as one of the foremost college educational centers for character animation in the United States, and has graduated such noted alums as John Lasseter, Brad Bird, Pete Docter and Tim Burton. It is one of four programs in the School of Film/Video, each with its own specialized curriculum and shared ethos for combining rigorous practical training with theoretical inquiry, hands-on production and aesthetic reflection.
Qualifications:
The School of Film/Video seeks a visionary candidate with a significant national reputation as a 2D character animator, a minimum of five years of experience producing animated projects, ideally some teaching experience at the college level, and the capacity to create an inventive and inspiring environment in the classroom. We welcome applicants whose exhibition records include, but are not limited to, any number of the following: feature film, festivals, the web, galleries, and museums. M.F.A. is preferred, but candidates with significant professional experience are welcome to apply and will also be considered. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to teaching, curriculum design and development, student achievement, and academic service.
Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include teaching and mentoring undergraduate students in a culturally and artistically diverse academic environment, advising students on individual film projects, as well as participating in departmental and administrative matters.
Curriculum:
Curriculum includes teaching courses that focus on foundational skills necessary for all aspects of 2D animation and the process of bringing characters to life, with an emphasis on motion analysis reflecting body weight and kinetics applied to various situations (walking, running, jumping). Courses also instruct students on dialog, acting, model sheets, x-sheets, timing techniques, live-action reference, and the philosophical tenets of the filmmaking process.
