Center for Research, Creativity and Innovation

An Introduction

A collaborative initiative joining CalArts, the Los Angeles United School District (LAUSD) and noted arts and education researcher, James S. Catterall, California Institute of the Arts' Center for Research, Creativity and Innovation conducts ongoing research into the individual and social impact of artistic activity and training on the development of young people.

One of CalArts’ core values and primary goals is fostering creativity in each and every one of our students. We don’t teach students “how to” or “what to” make; at CalArts the focus is on why we make art, and what it means to be a professional artist in the 21st century. Students are accepted on the basis of their creative potential as reflected in their portfolios and auditions, as well evidence of their curiosity, intelligence and imagination. From their first day on campus CalArts students are treated as artists as they pursue independent directions toward professional practices.

Our experience tells us (confirmed by research), that standardized test scores do not correlate with creative talent–yet, creative intelligence has been identified as a key indicator for positive social and economic growth. While national awareness of the value of creative problem-solving and entrepreneurial activity is on the rise, unfortunately, economic conditions have led to the slashing of arts education budgets throughout our public school systems. CalArts’ 23-year experience with the youth programs offered through its CalArts Community Arts Partnership (CAP) confirms that a “pedagogy of creativity” can change the lives of students K-12. Given a chance to address their own interests and concerns through the arts excites young people and engenders a desire in them to develop their means of expression.

In this climate and context, we understand–and want others to understand–that creativity is no longer a luxury. The nation needs individuals who can shape their own lives and careers, and a workforce that is flexible, adaptive and highly imaginative. Our educational systems at all levels must ensure the development of these qualities in all students.

The Center for Research, Creativity and Innovation at CalArts will further explore the function of creativity, and how it might be better fostered in K-12 education across the country. It will work to strengthen the role of arts in public schools and document the effects of arts and creativity on student achievement across the curriculum. The Center will also assist other institutions as they attempt to deepen their focus on creativity.
