CAP Music Programs

CalArts Saturday Music Program

This program offers 20 weeks of instruction for middle and high school students. At least one year of prior instrumental experience is required for participation in this program. Classes include theory, composition, sound recording and engineering, vocal ensemble, percussion, strings ensemble, chamber ensemble, jazz ensemble, and more. The program culminates with semester-end recitals performed in CalArts' premiere music pavilion, The Wild Beast.

CAP/Plaza de la Raza Music Program

This program provides 20 weeks of instrumental instruction in guitar, bass, drumset, flute, saxophone, voice, piano, songwriting, electronic music, music theory, and composition, as well as several music ensembles, including salsa band and rock band. The workshops culminate in a recital at Plaza de la Raza.

  • Dates: Oct. 8–Dec. 12, 2014 and Jan. 14–March 22, 2015 (No class Nov. 26 and Nov. 28)
  • Times: Wednesdays and Fridays, 4 pm–8 pm
  • Culminating Event: Sunday, March 22nd at 2pm

CAP/Santa Clarita Valley Youth Orchestra (SCVYO) Program

The Santa Clarita Valley Youth Orchestra is the premiere youth orchestra in the Santa Clarita Valley. The organization has three levels of orchestras for elementary through college age students and performs a variety of music from the classical genre. CalArts student instructors play alongside the students as section leaders/mentors. Classes culminate in performances at the College of the Canyons Performing Arts Center. CAP/Watts Towers Arts Center Piano Program

This 20-week program introduces young people to the art of playing the piano. Students learn the basics of music although all levels of experience are welcome. The program culminates in a public piano recital held at the Watts Towers Arts Center in the spring.

  • Dates: Oct. 8-Dec. 13, 2014 and Jan. 14-March 29, 2015 (No class on Nov. 26, Nov. 29)
  • Times: Wednesdays, 3 pm-7 pm and Saturdays, 10 am-3 pm
  • Culminating Event: Concert on Sunday, March 29th, 2015 at 1pm
