THEATER: Peter Handke's They Are Dying Out is an epic reflection on the psyche of the corporate world and how it infects the humanity of those who engage it. Business kingpin Hermann Quitt knows that it is challenging for him to live up to his own ideal image of life. Frustrated by this knowledge, he turns into an unethical monster who disregards his wife, breaks contracts, betrays and ruins his business associates, and leads him to commit the ultimate crime against himself. MFA Directing alum Chi-Wang Yang returns hom with this spellbinding German play, They Are Dying Out.
CalArts, Sharon Disney Lund Dance Theater
DANCE: The Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance presents its annual Spring Dance Concert, an evening of work by faculty choreographers Rosanna Gamson and Colin Connor and student choreographers.
REDCAT: The EMP (Experience Music Project) Pop Conference brings together academics, critics, performers and dedicated fans in a rare common discussion. On the heels of a blowout gathering in New York last spring, this year’s conference expands its scope to include five different gatherings over the course of a single weekend in Los Angeles, New Orleans, New York, Cleveland and Seattle. REDCAT hosts day two of EMP L.A., organized around the theme “Locals Only: Pop and Politics in This Town.” Commandeering the “Locals Only” slogan—seen for years scrawled on renegade signs at certain L.A. beaches—EMP L.A. pays tribute to the importance of location, neighborhood and community in defining “minority majority” regions. The event’s panels and roundtables engage music and multimedia through academic, journalistic and aesthetic approaches. Read more
